Nuria + Alex: Wedding Portraits as a Wedding Gift

It can be very difficult to decide on the perfect wedding gift for your own child. You want something that will make them think of you every time they look at it; something that will last well beyond the wedding day; and something that they will treasure for a lifetime.

Wedding portraits definitely fit the bill. Wedding portraits make the perfect gift for your son or daughter because these photographs will capture a moment in time without all the craziness and pressure of the wedding day festivities involved. Wedding portraits eliminate the background noise and really put a focus on the bride and groom.

Alex’s mother saw Rick Dean Photography written up in Natalie Mason’s Designer Bags and Dirty Diapers blog, which is based in Charleston, South Carolina. Natalie is Ricks’s close friend and next door neighbor! Even though the wedding was in Charlotte, North Carolina, Alex’s mom decided to surprise the couple with portraits on the beach in Charleston. Nuria and Alex did not have a professional photographer at their wedding ceremony, so this is why they opted for the portraits.

Nuria and Alex were married in Charlotte in an intimate backyard ceremony at the groom’s family’s house. The wedding festivities took place in the daytime, so there was ample time to come down to Charleston at sunset to take a gorgeous set of photographs. All of the pictures were done on the beach at Wild Dunes on Isle of Palms. The ocean was a fantastic backdrop.

Nuria brought a prop mask with her that photographed beautifully. Her dress was something very unique- a knit cream dress with Bohemian flair. This is not a style that we typically see on Lowcountry brides, so this made the photoshoot really fun. Nuria handcrafted her own veil.

These portraits made the perfect wedding gift for Nuria and Alex. A big thanks to Natalie of Designer Bags and Dirty Diapers blog and everyone else who made this shoot come together so perfectly.

Katlyn and Ryan’s Sentimental Island House Party Wedding

Katlyn and Ryan wanted to incorporate their family members into many aspects of their special day. They were flawlessly able to execute this through honoring their mothers at the ceremony and being married under an arbor handcrafted by the bride’s grandfather. The couple honored members of their families who have passed away by setting up a table at the reception with photographs and mementos from those people. Katlyn and Ryan made it clear that the day was meant for celebrating the union of two families. Aside from the serious aspects of the day, the couple really just wanted to throw a fabulous party.

Katlyn is a nurse practitioner, as well as a teacher at the Medical University of South Carolina. She loves anything outdoors, especially working in her garden. Katlyn leads a very active lifestyle that involves playing soccer, running, and kickboxing. Ryan works for a beverage distributor in the area- this is actually how the couple met! Ryan also loves to be outdoors. In his free time, he golfs and fishes.

On the morning of her wedding, Katlyn and her five bridesmaids began getting ready with the help of Lashes & Lace. The bridesmaids donned trendy mismatched dresses in varying shades of champagne. This went along with the color palette that featured champagne and shades of blue. The wedding day theme was rustic. Katlyn purchased her stunning wedding dress designed by Allure at Bridals by Jody in Charleston.

Once everyone had finished getting ready, Katlyn and Ryan did a great first look on the water at The Island House on John’s Island, South Carolina. This was a great location for a photoshoot with the bride and groom because the sun was shining bright. This couple was blessed with perfect weather for their outdoor ceremony. The florals for the day were designed and provided by JVM Events.

Time for the big party. The reception was under a tent at The Island House, with all rentals provided by Snyder. Katlyn and Ryan opted for a live band, Swingin’ Richards, for entertainment. The couple actually saw this band while vacationing in Belize before the wedding. It turns out that they were Charlotte based, so the couple invited the band to play at their wedding. Dinner was served by The Pampered Palette, and the food was absolutely decadent. Instead of a traditional wedding cake, the couple treated their guests to cupcakes by Three Little Bears. Katlyn and Ryan are pictured cutting into a personalized wedding cake by the same bakery.

After a long night of dancing, fun, and great live music, the newlyweds were sent off under a tunnel of neon glow sticks. This was a night to remember. Katlyn said it was her goal for everyone to have a great time at the reception and it was a huge party- an absolute success. Thank you to all who were apart of it!

Lauren and Nicole’s Sweet DIY Magnolia Plantation Wedding

These crafty brides did a fabulous job of coordinating and designing their own DIY wedding to the exact specifications that they have always dreamed about.

Lauren and Nicole had a big, traditional wedding at Magnolia Plantation in Charleston, SC. Time coordination and precise scheduling was key on this day because there was only one Bridal Suite and two brides. This included two hair and makeup teams from Lashes & Lace and a stifled limousine schedule. Lauren wore a wedding dress from Bridal House of Charleston, and Nicole wore a dress from Modern Trousseau. A favorite shot was one of the two pristine dresses hanging on the bridal suite building at Magnolia Plantation.

The brides did not do a first look, but instead chose to do a charming set of pictures were each bride stood on opposite sides of the door to the bridal suite. With hands intertwined, this made for a unique set of photographs because the brides never saw each other but could feel the excitement in each other’s hands.

What a great day for an outdoor ceremony in Charleston. The couple was married under a huge oak tree. This was very much a family affair. The flower girls were both family members. Although there were only bridesmaids dressed in champagne standing up with the brides, Nicole’s brothers were apart of the ceremony as well. Lauren’s sister was her matron of honor.  The bridesmaid’s dresses came from Bella Bridesmaids in Charleston

The reception was very sweet… literally. There was a full candy bar! The brides served cupcakes by Swank Bakery. The color palette featured the champagne color from the bridesmaids dresses and blush with gold accents. The flowers were another area that the brides DIYed. The wedding was catered by Crazy Dutchman Catering. Something fun for the wedding guests was a DIY Photo Booth with props. The wedding favors included koozies and adorable tubes of seeds.

The brides did a sparkler send off and drove away in Nicole’s pickup truck. This was such a fun wedding to see all of the great DIY aspects. It was evident that both brides worked very hard to plan and execute this day. Thank you to all who helped out, including Eventhaus for rentals.

Blair and Josh’s Fun-Filled Historic Rice Mill Destination Wedding

This fun-loving Georgia bride wanted to place a special emphasis on dancing and laughter at her Charleston destination wedding.

Blair and Josh are highschool sweethearts. They both share a passion for Georgia sports teams and vacationing at the beach. The stunning Charleston beaches definitely played into their decision of pursuing their destination wedding in Charleston, SC. Blair and Josh were adamant about including Josh’s son in their big day, making him their junior groomsman. Another important detail that Blair incorporated into her ceremony was her father’s pocketwatch. He passed away four years ago and she thought that this would be a heartfelt way of honoring him as she walked down the aisle. Blair’s bridesmaids were dressed in a navy blue, while the groomsmen wore gray tuxes. When asked about a theme for her wedding, she explained that with a destination wedding at a venue like this, there does not need to be a theme because the atmosphere speaks for itself.

The day started off with the bride getting ready at the Hilton Garden Inn Waterfront. This location made for some great nautical shots. Her stunning champagne colored dress was custom designed by Corrine of Wedding Angels in Roswell, GA.

Blair did not let a little bit of rain ruin her big day! The drizzle-filled afternoon made for a dramatically lit first look at the Historic Rice Mill. Luckily the rain stopped long enough for an outdoor ceremony on the water at this location. The sound of cellos and violins, courtesy of Palmetto Strings, rang out over the Ashley River as the couple said their I do’s.

Following the ceremony, the guests poured inside for a fabulous cocktail hour. The room was adorned with natural greens and ivory tones. Navy was a great choice for an accent color because it really made the more neutral colors pop. The tasteful florals were done by the bride’s very own aunt, Lynn Barnette.

Cakes by Kasarda created the perfect cake that echoed the classiness of the floral arrangements by adding floral accents to the cake. After the cake was cut, it came time for what Blair was most excited for- the dancing! The entertainment was provided by DJ Mateo of Other Brother Entertainment. Blair and all of her guests danced the night away.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this seamlessly wonderful day! Special thanks to Jessica Cheney of Lowcountry Weddings by Jessica for planning, and Duvall Events for rentals.

Sarah & Matt’s Family-Centered Wedding at the Harbor Club

We love it when weddings are a family affair! When Sarah and Matt married last fall, they emphasized that their nuptials were a celebration of their love for each other and all the family members who paved the way for their big day. This was surely a family centered affair.

The bridal party consisted of Sarah and Matt’s many siblings and closest friends. We had a blast  photographing as the bridal party was getting ready with the help of hair and makeup artists from Alise Buckner and Charleston Lash and Beauty Bar. After the ceremony at St. Benedict Church, we all headed down to Waterfront Park to take photos with the family-centered bridal party. We loved having the chance to take so many portraits with the various groups of dashingly dressed brothers and sisters!

We also took some time in Waterfront Park to capture portraits and bridals for the lovely couple under the oaks and alongside the Charleston harbor. We couldn’t get enough of Sarah’s cathedral-length veil or her gorgeous lace gown from Allure Bridals.

Following the portraits at Waterfront Park, the wedding party headed to the Harbor Club for a reception filled with DIY details. The mother of the bride created gorgeous bouquets and floral arrangements with flowers from Horst Flowers, while the bride’s friends, Lauren Geddings and Sophie Waters, pitched in to decorate the venue. Sarah really found a way to make each family member feel included to make this such a family centered event.

Sarah, Matt, and their family spent the evening celebrating with cake from Serving You Joy, music from DTSMB, and a photo booth from Charleston Photo Booths. Their heartfelt day concluded with a sparkler exit and a rickshaw ride courtesy of Charleston Pedicab.

Amy and Kai’s Waterfront Wedding at the Pavilion at Patriots Point

What an amazing day for an outdoor wedding at Pavilion at Patriots Point.  We started the day downtown at the Jasmine House Inn, where Amy and her bridesmaids were getting ready. As always, Lashes and Lace did a beautiful job with hair and makeup and were a pleasure to work with! The waterfront made a great backdrop for this special day.

After the bride and her bridesmaids were dressed, we took a few family portraits and then headed off to Patriots Point for the ceremony and reception.

Amy and Kai wed outside in a romantic ceremony beneath hanging lanterns and in front of the Pavillon’s courtyard maze. Beautiful bouquets from Charleston Flower Market and an aisle adorned in white rose petals helped make the nuptials even more special.

After the ceremony, Rick Dean Photography convened with the newlyweds for a series of waterfront portraits. While we were taking portraits, we were graced with a beautiful sunset over the Cooper River. We couldn’t be happier with the way these turned out!

At the reception, guests celebrated in a venue adorned with thoughtful DIY details courtesy of the very talented bride and her family. We were amazed with the bride’s self-designed wedding invitations, programs, table numbers, and festive signs. The bold navy and green stripes on the dinner menu and colorful accents throughout were a huge hit! Family members added to the fun, handmade festivities by creating fun games for the reception.

We had a blast photographing Amy, Kai, and their guests celebrating alongside the Cooper River. A big thank you to all the vendors who participated in Amy and Kai’s special day!  It was a fun-filled Charleston celebration seamlessly coordinated by Relish Distinctive Catering with rentals from Snyder, cake from Publix Bakery, and music and lighting from Fingersnappin’ Entertainment all helped make for a lovely evening.

Dustin and Doug’s Chic Southern Wedding at the Legare Waring House

The weather gods must have been shining on Dustin and Doug’s big day! Despite torrential downpours throughout the morning, Dustin and Doug’s beautifully chic outdoor ceremony at the Legare Waring House was a huge success thanks to excellent planning from Simply Eventful Charleston and a little meteorological luck!

Getting ready with Dustin, Doug, and their bridal party was a true joy. Dustin and Doug both expressed their desire for a celebration that was both chic and personal. The blush bridesmaid’s dresses beautifully complimented the Legare Waring House’s celadon green rooms. The varied chic necklines of the dresses added subtle variety and texture. As the girls were getting ready, we had a blast photographing the groomsmen. Doug gave all of his groomsmen wooden baseball bats as a homage to their shared love for the game, which made for some excellent photo opportunities.

The gorgeous couple incorporated sophisticated southern details throughout the day, even in their attire! Dustin’s beautiful, cascading earrings echoed both the chandeliers of the Legare Waring House and the soft layers of her gorgeous lace gown and waterfall skirt. Doug wore a white dinner jacket a turkey feather bowtie handcrafted by Charleston’s very own Brackish Bowties.

Thanks to Eventwork’s heroic last-minute delivery of flooring for the aisle, Dustin and Doug were able to fulfill their dreams of wedding under the oaks. A distressed white wooden bench layered in ivy provided a gorgeous backdrop to the couple’s vows. Simply Eventful’s stunningly chic blush, pink, and celadon bouquets and floral arrangements further added to the splendor and charm.

The couple, their family, and their friends proceeded to spend the rest of the day celebrating and dancing around the fountain in the Legare Waring House courtyard. The rustic wooden chairs, white tablecloths, and distressed silver flower boxes by Eventworks and Simply Eventful helped transform the courtyard into a chic southern paradise. Blush peonies and pink roses adorned the tables AND the gorgeous floral cake by Elaine’s Events.

A huge thanks to the many vendors who made Dustin and Doug’s wedding special. Between all of the fine flowers and details from Simply Eventful, the great food by Gourmet Bay Catering, and the excellent music by Hip Pocket band, we couldn’t have imagined a more beautiful and fun-filled evening.
