Lauren + Maxwell’s Preppy Casual Wedding

This preppy casual affair is complete with Bermuda shorts and bowties- all which ties together the kelly green and white color scheme the couple has chosen. The bride and groom chose this theme because it describes their personalities and their goal for the wedding is for their guests to have a fun and memorable night.

Lauren and Maxwell made Charleston their destination! Lauren is the assistant Vice President at an insurance company in Atlanta.  Maxwell is an industrial engineer, but his current occupation is as a stay-at-home dad to their son Dean. Lauren and Maxwell met at their local watering hole after a wine festival. They became fast friends and this eventually grew into something more. Before they knew it, Maxwell was proposing to her in her hometown of Port Jefferson Harbor, NY. The two love birds enjoy staying active together. Bike riding, cooking, playing sports, and boating are just a few of the things that the share a passion for.

This event took place at Seaside Point at Wild Dunes. This added to the very southern preppy feeling to it. The event was casual, but still very well put together and executed. Lauren’s beautifully stark white David’s Bridal gown was stunning and fit the theme perfectly. Lauren and Maxwell opted for a first look and it was so sweet, these two are head over heels for each other! Their I-do’s took place with a clear view of the Atlantic. This was a great location because it was at the beach, but not in the sand. It was nice to give off the beach vibe without having to worry about getting sandy. The couple did get some great shots on the beach at sunset. Back at the reception, there were preppy touches everywhere. Custom sunglasses, gift bags with pineapple stickers, King of Pops ice pops, and the list goes on! All of the guests had a blast dancing to DJ Alan Brown, and being united as one big, happy, family. At the end of the night, Lauren and Maxwell were sent off with colorful glow sticks. This also made for some great shots.

This was a fantastic night. Weddings can sometimes feel very prim and proper, but this is an example of one that was all about classy comfort. A special thanks to Jennifer fox at JW Weddings for the coordination, Justin Wham of JW Weddings for the decor and florals, Harris Teeter Isle of Palms for all of the baked goods, and Kacie Faulling of Lashes and Lace for hair and makeup.

Anna + John’s Beach Themed Wild Dunes Wedding

Anna and John chose a destination wedding venue with a predetermined theme- the beach! Wild Dunes Resort is a beachfront destination located on Isle of Palms. This Tennessee couple played up the ocean backdrop by adding beach decorations. Anna set up mason jars with sand, seashells, and blue sea glass. This is such a cute and cost effective DIY. Keeping with the beach theme, the couple went with a tropical fruit and yogurt bar at the reception. Anna and John also served a tremendous amount of seafood- oysters, lobster, and crab galore.

Anna wore a stunning white gown with lace overlays and a beaded belt. The details on the dress and in the jewelry were exquisite. Hair and makeup was done by Vanity Salon. Anna’s five bridesmaids were pure sunshine in their yellow dresses. Anna chose to go with more traditional matching bridesmaids dresses. John had six groomsmen who looked dashing in their black tuxes with gold accents. The wedding party looked as classy as ever; despite the sun, sand, and heat.

The outdoor ceremony overlooked the ocean. Anna and John could not have asked for better weather. They were able to exchange vows underneath a pristine blue sky. A special aspect of the ceremony was the talent of a string quartet, thanks to Entertainment Charleston. Children were also very involved in the day, with three ring bearers and two flower girls. Anna’s bridal bouquet contained light pink and light yellow roses with sprigs of green. Belva’s Flower Shop did a great job with the florals throughout the ceremony and the reception space. The location offered a tremendous amount of romantic photo opportunities both on the beach and on a secluded path under some island greenery.

The reception was held at the Wild Dunes Grand Pavilion.  The get-together was very kid friendly and family oriented. The live band, Town, was playing, which added to the fun vibe of the night. The wedding cake from Cakes by Kasarda was simple, yet elegant by coordinating the floral design on the cake with the real flowers from throughout the day. Charleston famous pralines decorated with chocolate ganache and white icing acted as wedding favors. What a sweet touch from River Street Sweets. This definitely tied in a taste of historic downtown Charleston. The bride and groom exited the venue under a tunnel of sparklers and hopped into a golf cart to begin their honeymoon!

Anna and John maintained the perfect balance of formal and fun for their beachside wedding. A special thanks goes out to the Day of Coordinator, Amanda, of Southern Chic Events.

Nuria + Alex: Wedding Portraits as a Wedding Gift

It can be very difficult to decide on the perfect wedding gift for your own child. You want something that will make them think of you every time they look at it; something that will last well beyond the wedding day; and something that they will treasure for a lifetime.

Wedding portraits definitely fit the bill. Wedding portraits make the perfect gift for your son or daughter because these photographs will capture a moment in time without all the craziness and pressure of the wedding day festivities involved. Wedding portraits eliminate the background noise and really put a focus on the bride and groom.

Alex’s mother saw Rick Dean Photography written up in Natalie Mason’s Designer Bags and Dirty Diapers blog, which is based in Charleston, South Carolina. Natalie is Ricks’s close friend and next door neighbor! Even though the wedding was in Charlotte, North Carolina, Alex’s mom decided to surprise the couple with portraits on the beach in Charleston. Nuria and Alex did not have a professional photographer at their wedding ceremony, so this is why they opted for the portraits.

Nuria and Alex were married in Charlotte in an intimate backyard ceremony at the groom’s family’s house. The wedding festivities took place in the daytime, so there was ample time to come down to Charleston at sunset to take a gorgeous set of photographs. All of the pictures were done on the beach at Wild Dunes on Isle of Palms. The ocean was a fantastic backdrop.

Nuria brought a prop mask with her that photographed beautifully. Her dress was something very unique- a knit cream dress with Bohemian flair. This is not a style that we typically see on Lowcountry brides, so this made the photoshoot really fun. Nuria handcrafted her own veil.

These portraits made the perfect wedding gift for Nuria and Alex. A big thanks to Natalie of Designer Bags and Dirty Diapers blog and everyone else who made this shoot come together so perfectly.

Blair and Josh’s Fun-Filled Historic Rice Mill Destination Wedding

This fun-loving Georgia bride wanted to place a special emphasis on dancing and laughter at her Charleston destination wedding.

Blair and Josh are highschool sweethearts. They both share a passion for Georgia sports teams and vacationing at the beach. The stunning Charleston beaches definitely played into their decision of pursuing their destination wedding in Charleston, SC. Blair and Josh were adamant about including Josh’s son in their big day, making him their junior groomsman. Another important detail that Blair incorporated into her ceremony was her father’s pocketwatch. He passed away four years ago and she thought that this would be a heartfelt way of honoring him as she walked down the aisle. Blair’s bridesmaids were dressed in a navy blue, while the groomsmen wore gray tuxes. When asked about a theme for her wedding, she explained that with a destination wedding at a venue like this, there does not need to be a theme because the atmosphere speaks for itself.

The day started off with the bride getting ready at the Hilton Garden Inn Waterfront. This location made for some great nautical shots. Her stunning champagne colored dress was custom designed by Corrine of Wedding Angels in Roswell, GA.

Blair did not let a little bit of rain ruin her big day! The drizzle-filled afternoon made for a dramatically lit first look at the Historic Rice Mill. Luckily the rain stopped long enough for an outdoor ceremony on the water at this location. The sound of cellos and violins, courtesy of Palmetto Strings, rang out over the Ashley River as the couple said their I do’s.

Following the ceremony, the guests poured inside for a fabulous cocktail hour. The room was adorned with natural greens and ivory tones. Navy was a great choice for an accent color because it really made the more neutral colors pop. The tasteful florals were done by the bride’s very own aunt, Lynn Barnette.

Cakes by Kasarda created the perfect cake that echoed the classiness of the floral arrangements by adding floral accents to the cake. After the cake was cut, it came time for what Blair was most excited for- the dancing! The entertainment was provided by DJ Mateo of Other Brother Entertainment. Blair and all of her guests danced the night away.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this seamlessly wonderful day! Special thanks to Jessica Cheney of Lowcountry Weddings by Jessica for planning, and Duvall Events for rentals.

Amy and Kai’s Waterfront Wedding at the Pavilion at Patriots Point

What an amazing day for an outdoor wedding at Pavilion at Patriots Point.  We started the day downtown at the Jasmine House Inn, where Amy and her bridesmaids were getting ready. As always, Lashes and Lace did a beautiful job with hair and makeup and were a pleasure to work with! The waterfront made a great backdrop for this special day.

After the bride and her bridesmaids were dressed, we took a few family portraits and then headed off to Patriots Point for the ceremony and reception.

Amy and Kai wed outside in a romantic ceremony beneath hanging lanterns and in front of the Pavillon’s courtyard maze. Beautiful bouquets from Charleston Flower Market and an aisle adorned in white rose petals helped make the nuptials even more special.

After the ceremony, Rick Dean Photography convened with the newlyweds for a series of waterfront portraits. While we were taking portraits, we were graced with a beautiful sunset over the Cooper River. We couldn’t be happier with the way these turned out!

At the reception, guests celebrated in a venue adorned with thoughtful DIY details courtesy of the very talented bride and her family. We were amazed with the bride’s self-designed wedding invitations, programs, table numbers, and festive signs. The bold navy and green stripes on the dinner menu and colorful accents throughout were a huge hit! Family members added to the fun, handmade festivities by creating fun games for the reception.

We had a blast photographing Amy, Kai, and their guests celebrating alongside the Cooper River. A big thank you to all the vendors who participated in Amy and Kai’s special day!  It was a fun-filled Charleston celebration seamlessly coordinated by Relish Distinctive Catering with rentals from Snyder, cake from Publix Bakery, and music and lighting from Fingersnappin’ Entertainment all helped make for a lovely evening.

Dustin and Doug’s Chic Southern Wedding at the Legare Waring House

The weather gods must have been shining on Dustin and Doug’s big day! Despite torrential downpours throughout the morning, Dustin and Doug’s beautifully chic outdoor ceremony at the Legare Waring House was a huge success thanks to excellent planning from Simply Eventful Charleston and a little meteorological luck!

Getting ready with Dustin, Doug, and their bridal party was a true joy. Dustin and Doug both expressed their desire for a celebration that was both chic and personal. The blush bridesmaid’s dresses beautifully complimented the Legare Waring House’s celadon green rooms. The varied chic necklines of the dresses added subtle variety and texture. As the girls were getting ready, we had a blast photographing the groomsmen. Doug gave all of his groomsmen wooden baseball bats as a homage to their shared love for the game, which made for some excellent photo opportunities.

The gorgeous couple incorporated sophisticated southern details throughout the day, even in their attire! Dustin’s beautiful, cascading earrings echoed both the chandeliers of the Legare Waring House and the soft layers of her gorgeous lace gown and waterfall skirt. Doug wore a white dinner jacket a turkey feather bowtie handcrafted by Charleston’s very own Brackish Bowties.

Thanks to Eventwork’s heroic last-minute delivery of flooring for the aisle, Dustin and Doug were able to fulfill their dreams of wedding under the oaks. A distressed white wooden bench layered in ivy provided a gorgeous backdrop to the couple’s vows. Simply Eventful’s stunningly chic blush, pink, and celadon bouquets and floral arrangements further added to the splendor and charm.

The couple, their family, and their friends proceeded to spend the rest of the day celebrating and dancing around the fountain in the Legare Waring House courtyard. The rustic wooden chairs, white tablecloths, and distressed silver flower boxes by Eventworks and Simply Eventful helped transform the courtyard into a chic southern paradise. Blush peonies and pink roses adorned the tables AND the gorgeous floral cake by Elaine’s Events.

A huge thanks to the many vendors who made Dustin and Doug’s wedding special. Between all of the fine flowers and details from Simply Eventful, the great food by Gourmet Bay Catering, and the excellent music by Hip Pocket band, we couldn’t have imagined a more beautiful and fun-filled evening.

Reflect: Family, Festive, and Fun- Shannon & Brian Celebrate at Old Historic Rice Mill

Shannon Murphy and Brian Peterson wanted their wedding day to reflect two important sides of their personality. The “formal, serious, religious” side and the “fun loving, relaxed, hanging with family & friends” side.

Did they succeed? Absolutely. For proof, check out the images below, captured by the Rick Dean Photography team.

The day started for Shannon and her bridal party with hair & makeup with the team at Willow Salon. Next stop, Marriott Renaissance Charleston Historic District Hotel to dress for the day. Brian and the guys were also prepping at the Marriott Renaissance Charleston Historic District Hotel but safely located on a different floor thanks to the detailed coordination of their wedding planner, Sarah Rodelsperger of Wingate Plantation. On both floors, in full view was the “fun loving, relaxed, hanging with family & friends” side of both their personalities which certainly made for great pictures.

With transportation provided by Absolutely Charleston on their Old Charleston Trolley, it was time to head to the church for the “formal, serious, religious” side of the day. The couple had their ceremony at the historic Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in beautiful downtown Charleston. The cathedral dates back to the 1850’s.

Shannon and Brian’s wedding day timeline included 2+ hours between the ceremony and the reception to visit 3 of their favorite spots in downtown Charleston. With the wedding party in tow and transportation provided on the Old Charleston Trolley, the Rick Dean Photography team captured fun, romantic images at White Point Gardens, Waterfront Park and The Dock Street Theatre providing the backdrop.

During the “around the town” photoshoot, the incredible staff of the Old Historic Rice Mill was putting the final touches on the reception venue. Good Food Catering was busy in the kitchen creating a crowd pleasing meal.  Also hard at work was the Buy The Bunch team creating flower arrangements, along with Palmetto City Photo Booth & Permanent Vacation Band setting up for the evening’s entertainment.

Formal. Serious. Festive. Fun. Shannon and Brian said yes to it all.

Hunt + Rost – Great Charleston Flood Wedding & Planner Saves the Day

I have often heard that if it rains on your wedding day, you are guarantee a long happy marriage.  Since there is always a chance of rain occurring for some period of time every season in Charleston, we encourage every couple having an outdoor ceremony and/or beach wedding to have a rainy day back-up plan.

The “In Case Of Rain” plan for the October 3, 2015 wedding of Raleigh, NC couple, Nicole Hunt & Ben Rost at Founders Hall at Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site was created and in place. Their outdoor ceremony to take place on the Grand Lawn will be moved indoors to the spacious screened porch. The plan was finalized months before the wedding so vendors would be ready for whatever the day might bring.

The rains started on Thursday October 1st and quickly became the lead story of every local news cast. The following day the rains greatly increased and Charleston became the lead story on the national news. The 23.7 inches of rain in Charleston between October 1st to the 5th will absolutely guarantee that Nicole and Ben will have one of the happiest marriages of all time, along with every other couple that were able to tie the knot over that flooded weekend.

Nicole and Ben planned their intimate wedding weekend to include their young son and a small group of family and friends. With less than 50 guests, they were able to invite all to attend the rehearsal dinner aboard the SpiritLine Dinner Cruise providing views of Charleston and the surround area from the harbor. The lights of the Ravenel Bridge cutting through the fog and heavy rains provided a mystical backdrop for a fun relaxing evening.

Charleston Wedding Photography

Hunt + Rost Wedding © Rick Dean Photography

By morning most of downtown Charleston roads were flooded forcing Charleston police to stop all traffic coming into the city. It was also announced that the road going into Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site and the wedding venue was under several feet of water. Due to the quick thinking of the couple’s wedding planner, Karen Porreca of Simply Eventful, the day’s events were moved to Karen’s home located on “high ground” in the West Ashley area of Charleston, just 15 minutes from downtown. Karen notified the couple of the change and quickly got the couple and all guest who were staying downtown relocated to a coffee shop close to Karen’s home.

By 9am, the Rick Dean Photography team arrived at Karen’s home to move living & dining room furniture into the master bedroom. By Noon, the Eventworks Rentals team arrived to set up dinner seating. Mix Premier Bar Service took over the screened porch to provide refreshments for the evening while Gourmet Bay Catering set up operations in Karen’s kitchen. The only vendor not able to relocate due to lack of space was Chillula, the band for the reception.

Charleston Wedding Photography

By 2pm, Nicole, her mother and bridesmaids were settled in Karen’s guestroom getting ready for the day. The room was filled with silvers, golds and glamour. The sparkle was not lost due to the change of venue.

The couple’s love of cigars took center stage in the decor. Cigar boxes filled with pink and white roses. Personalized cigars as take-aways. Due to the rain, the enjoyment of sipping bourbon while smoking a cigar was limited to a small covered space just outside the porch.

Gourmet Bay Catering did an excellent job preparing and presenting the original menu regardless of the limited space provided in a standard residential kitchen. Certainly a highlight of the evening.

The evening ended with a salute to the couple’s and guest’s favorite teams with all involved showing good sportsmanship. Today’s winning team? That’s easy. The team of vendors this lucky couple chose to hire months ago, long before the rain appeared on radar.

McKinney + Richardson – Bridal Portrait, Wedding & Reception at Old Wide Awake Plantation

Miranda McKinney and John Richardson love South Carolina. Discussing their connection to the Palmetto State during our first meeting, she shared “It’s where we met, fell in love and will spend the rest of our lives together.” They currently reside in York, SC, just an hour north of Charleston, but their dream is to live in the Lowcountry. Reminiscing about past visits to Charleston, she states “We spend our days walking the cobblestone streets and eating the best food in the South. We stroll through the Historic Charleston City Market and make our way to The Battery. We will continue to make memories here!”

Miranda and John dreamed of a Lowcountry wedding in a location that offered everything they love about the area. From the perfect venue and weather conditions to the handpicked group of wedding vendors, their dream came true! They chose Old Wide Awake Plantation in Hollywood, SC for both Miranda’s bridal portrait and their wedding. The venue offers the feel of Old Charleston but with wide open spaces and marsh/river views located a few hundred yards away in Wide Awake Park, the original home site dating back to the early 1800’s.

As I mentioned in previous posts, the staff of Rick Dean Photography love shooting bridal portraits for several reasons. First and foremost, if you complete a bridal portrait session, your photographer will feel like an old friend on your wedding day. Since you have already worked together, you can relax knowing your images will be flawless. Old Wide Awake Plantation is the perfect spot for a bridal portrait offering so many beautiful backdrops & locations as you will see in the images below.

Directing the day’s events, keeping everything relaxed & on time was Margaret McKenzie, venue coordinator at the plantation. While the guys prepared for the day, watching a little football at the Charleston Marriott, Miranda and her girls were getting pampered and prepped by Kacie of Lashes and Lace in the bridal suite at the plantation house. Bouquets and table arrangements were skillful created by Charleston Blooms.

Before walking down the aisle, the couple exchanged gifts without exchanges glances, keeping the content of their letters private. After a quick First Look between father and daughter, filled with anticipation, it was time for Miranda to make her grand enterence down the front steps of the home.

Henson + Griffin – Wedding & Reception at The Links at Patriots Point

Ashley Henson and John Griffin live in Weymouth, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston and are all about family. They both come from large families and love to spend time with them. Some families are closer than others and I can honestly say these two families are close, they like each other and know how to have a good time. It was such a joy photographing Ashley & John’s wedding day surrounded by family and friends. They are getting married at The Links at Patriots Point.

As Ashley stated on their photography contract, “Regarding the wedding party, we are including all of our siblings, nieces and nephews. That totals 13 bridesmaids, 9 groomsmen, 3 flower girls and 4 ring bearers. Our families are extremely important to us!” Photographing very large wedding parties can be a challenge but not with this group. They spend so much time together as a large group, they are experienced in organizing and doing what it takes to “get the job done”. Did I mention how very nice and fun they were to work with. You can see it in the images from the day.

Ashley and her girls started the day with hair and makeup at their beach house rental on the Isle Of Palms. Paper Dolls did an outstanding job and completed their task on time. The guys got ready for the day at the Hilton Garden Inn, a new waterfront hotel in downtown Charleston.

The couple chose to have a First Look so that the majority of posed photos could be completed prior to the ceremony which allowed the couple to hang out with their guests during happy hour. Rick Dean Photography staff found an intimate tree shaded spot just steps away from the main event space of The Links at Patriots Point. We love seeing the joy on a groom’s face upon seeing his bride for the first time. It makes us smile each and every time! It never gets old. And it’s such an honor to be included in this very special, very intimate moment in a couple’s life.

After a quick check of hair and makeup, it was time for the ceremony. If there needed to be more proof of the closeness of their families, John and Ashley chose John’s father to be their wedding officiant. Walking Ashley down the aisle was both her birth father and her step dad, showing the importance both have been in her life. “We all get along!”

Keeping the day relaxed and on time was Ms. Lacy Davidson and her expert team of Relish Distinctive CateringChef John Roskowski created a menu to satisfy each and every guest. The couple chose Marble Slab to be onsite to create personalized ice cream sundaes for dessert!

To get the crowd moving after a filling dinner was DJ & Photobooth services provided by Stephen Darby of Epic Charleston. Capturing the action on video was Shawn Whittington of Lowcountry Wedding Films. In lieu of a Grand Exit, the couple decided they would rather stay till the very end allowing them to spend every minute celebrating with family and friends. Did I mention they love their family!!! This was the perfect day at Links at Patriots Point
